Elementary School Curriculum
At the elementary school level our goal is to develop confident, caring and capable children who are active, happy learners. We achieve this goal by offering a curriculum that is inquiry driven. In all areas of learning we encourage students to question, to hypothesize and to investigate in order to build their understanding of the world around them.
Mathematics, literacy, science, social studies, technology, music, art and physical education are taught throughout the week. We use a balanced literacy model to encourage a love of reading and writing and to support each child in his/her unique literacy development. Our math curriculum follows the vaunted "Everyday Math" curriculum developed by the University of Chicago. Science classes are inquiry-based and use the Full Option Science System (FOSS). Our library provides students with a wealth of material to explore their interests. Subject areas are integrated as appropriate to ensure children can explore topics from a range of perspectives and in depth.

As an inclusive school we recognize that many of our students are learning English as an additional language. New students are assessed to determine English language proficiency. For those students who require additional English language support, services are provided by our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department on a regular basis. Students not requiring additional support are enrolled in our Myanmar studies program.
At ISM, teachers use the Understanding by Design model to create units that focus on the essential understandings, topics, or ideas that really matter. See the links below for an overview of each grade level's curricular scope and sequence. Please note that these units are under continuous review, as teachers seek to find new ways to improve and personalize student learning.
