Middle School Curriculum

The Middle School curriculum at the International School of Myanmar is designed to meet the needs of students who are in a unique developmental stage between childhood and adolescence. Rigorous academic courses and a range of exploratory classes provide a firm foundation for High School success. Co-curricular learning through Week Without Walls as well as community service, sports, and after school activities, foster student leadership and independence.

As an inclusive school we recognize that many of our students are learning English as an additional language. New students are assessed to determine English language proficiency. For those students who require additional English language support, services are provided by our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department on a regular basis.

For each course we offer, ISM teachers use the Understanding by Design (UbD) model to collaboratively develop and implement standards-based unit plans. Most of the best international schools use a similar strategy, because UbD helps teachers set clear goals and then personalize instruction to ensure all students are able to display a deep understanding of each unit's core concepts. See the links below for an overview of each grade level's curricular scope and sequence. Please note that these units are under continuous review, as teachers seek to find new ways to improve and personalize student learning.
