ISM recognizes that the characteristics of a professional learning community – with shared norms and values, a primacy of focus on student learning, de-privatized practice, collaboration, and structured reflection – are an important influence on student learning. We are using the Understanding by Design approach to unit planning to ensure that every student attains our ESLRs, achieves the standards, and fulfills our Mission Statement.
We have therefore set as our 2012–2013 School Goals:
-
To align standards, benchmarks and ESLRs with instruction through unit-based planning and assessment.
-
To build the capacity of teachers to collaborate as members of a professional learning community.
-
To increase student English language proficiency as measured by both in-house and external assessment.

To reach these goals, grade level teams and departments are collaboratively developing and implementing standards based units, while the ESOL department provides further support to facilitate Goal Three. Each teacher brings to the school a wealth of knowledge and experience. At ISM, teachers add value to the curriculum development process by contributing ideas to ensure all students have access to a world class learning experience.
